WHAT IS KERATOCONUS?

Keratoconus is a progressive corneal condition that causes the cornea to become cone-shaped, leading to blurred, ghosted, or distorted vision that can be difficult to correct — especially at night or in bright light.

Common symptoms include:

  • Vision that’s always slightly blurry or distorted, even with glasses

  • Halos, glare, or starbursts around lights

  • Light sensitivity or discomfort in bright conditions

  • Poor night vision or worsening night driving

  • Frequent or rapid prescription changes

Early signs are often subtle, which is why many patients go undiagnosed for years.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

While the exact cause of keratoconus isn’t fully understood, certain factors are known to play a role:

  • Genetics – It can run in families, increasing the likelihood of development

  • Chronic eye rubbing or allergies – Continuous irritation may weaken the cornea

  • Associated conditions – Keratoconus is more common in patients with conditions such as Down syndrome, Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, alopecia, or other connective tissue disorders

HOW DO WE DIAGNOSE IT AT INSIGHT

At Insight Complete Eye Care, we use advanced corneal imaging technology to detect keratoconus early — often before you notice vision changes. This allows us to personalize treatment and protect your vision long-term.

Our process includes:

Corneal Topography

A painless scan that creates a color map showing the shape of your cornea, helping us detect signs of keratoconus early.

Pachymetry

Measures the exact thickness of your cornea to monitor for thinning, even in the earliest stages of the disease.

Pentacam Tomography

Provides a 3D view of the cornea’s front and back surfaces, capturing subtle changes that other scans might miss.

Additional Advanced Diagnostics

Some patients with more complex corneal abnormalities may benefit from even more specialized imaging. At Insight, we also offer:

sMap3D

Scans over a million data points across the front of your eye, allowing us to custom-design lenses that align with every curve.

Ovitz xWave Aberrometry

Reveals hidden visual distortions like ghosting, halos, and starbursts that standard eye exams often overlook.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

There’s no cure, but our team offers non-surgical and advanced options to restore vision and slow progression.
