Having Trouble Seeing Clearly - Even With Glasses? You May Have Keratoconus
DISCOVER THE FACTS ABOUT KERATOCONUS
Early Detection. Personalized Treatment. Advanced Care.
Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition where the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) thins and bulges into a cone shape. This irregularity distorts light entering the eye, leading to blurred or distorted vision, glare, and light sensitivity. As it advances, standard glasses or contact lenses may no longer provide clear vision.

Common Symptoms of Keratoconus
Most patients are unaware they have Keratoconus. Early symptoms of Keratoconus include blurrier vision or progressively poor vision that is not easily corrected. Other Keratoconus symptoms include:

GLARE AND HALOS AROUND LIGHTS

SENSITIVITY TO
BRIGHT LIGHTS

EYE IRRITATION
AND HEADACHES

POOR VISION
AT NIGHT

WORSENING VISION OR CLOUDY VISION
WHAT CAUSES KERATOCONUS?
While the exact cause is unknown, keratoconus is believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and systemic factors. It often runs in families and can be worsened by:
-
Chronic eye rubbing
-
Eye allergies or irritation
-
Conditions like Down syndrome or connective tissue disorders
DETECTING KERATOCONUS
Recognizing early signs of Keratoconus can help prevent vision loss. Common symptoms include:
-
Blurred or distorted vision
-
Glare and halos, especially at night
-
Light sensitivity
-
Frequent changes in your glasses or contact lens prescription
-
Vision that doesn’t correct to 20/20 with glasses

ADVANCED KERATOCONUS DIAGNOSIS TOOLS
If you’re concerned about your vision or have a family history of keratoconus, it’s important to schedule regular comprehensive eye exams. We use state-of-the-art keratoconus diagnosis tools and eye imaging for keratoconus to detect the condition early and monitor its progression.
Our comprehensive diagnostic process can include:
-
Visual acuity testing
-
Corneal topography – 3D eye imaging for keratoconus
-
Pachymetry – Measuring corneal thickness
-
Slit-lamp exam – Evaluating corneal clarity and shape
Our Technology
Scleral Profilometry Guided Contact Lens Fitting:
sMap3D™ is a non-invasive corneo-scleral topographer that maps the eye’s surface in 3–5 minutes. It captures one million data points using three gaze directions to create a precise 360° map of the cornea and sclera. This data enables the creation of custom scleral lenses for improved comfort, fit, and vision, reducing the need for multiple fittings.
Ovitz Higher Order Aberration Correction:
The OVITZ xwave aberrometer detects aberrations anywhere they exist along the path of light through your eye. Then a scleral contact lens is specially designed and made with built-in corrections for your eye to achieve your clearest vision possible to try and eliminate glare, ghosting, starbursts, haloes, and distortions. We are one of five offices in the state of Texas with this design and the only current providers in the DFW area.
TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR KERATOCONUS
While there is no cure, modern treatments can significantly improve vision and slow disease progression.
Non-Surgical Solutions:
-
Eyeglasses or soft contacts (for early stages)
-
Specialty contact lenses like scleral or rigid gas-permeable lenses
Advanced Procedures:
-
Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) – Strengthens the cornea to prevent worsening
-
CTAK (Cornea Tissue Addition Keratoplasty)
-
Topography-guided PRK
-
Intracorneal ring segments (ICRS)
-
Laser-assisted corneal transplant (for severe cases)
